I do my best to do what’s right for our musical community, to support and uplift it, and use music as a force for good.
—Mason Reed, owner Tim’s Tavern and now Slim’s Last Chance
A grab bag of news and events this week that filled me with joy and hope.
1. Witnessing the Dusty 45s rock the house last Sunday, at one of the final shows at Slim’s Last Chance in Georgetown. I’m grateful both for the good times (and great chili verde) I’ve had there and for the news this vital music and dance venue will live on. Owners Celeste and Michael Lucas, who are moving to California, made it possible for Mason Reed — owner of Tim’s (Together In Music) Tavern in White Center — to take over Slim’s unique roadhouse (more).
2. Seattle Dances, a competition raising money for Plymouth Housing (providing housing and support to people who’ve experienced long-term homelessness), March 7. It’s a win-win, spreading the word about the wonderful world of partner dance and helping our neighbors in the process. See King 5 anchor Mimi Jung, one of the local celebrity participants, practice with partner Stephen White at the Reverie Ballroom (video).
3. Curley Taylor, coming to Seattle’s historic Royal Esquire Club for a show I’m presenting February 15 (below). Curley is one of the team of musicians who won a Grammy Sunday night for the album A Tribute to the King of Zydeco(award video). What an honor it’ll be to host a newly minted Grammy Award winner!
4. The Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl February 8. To feel the spirit, watch dance duo Austin and Marideth Telenko perform their very cool choreography to the NFL theme music (Instagram video). Go Hawks!
